Ideas for a local trip

Go away this winter or plan to ‘travel locally’ in Old Montreal.

“Local Trip “– this new expression took on its full meaning this summer when travelling abroad was suspended and we learned how to rediscover our Province and its tourist attractions. It’s true that you don’t have to travel very far to feel disoriented and have the feeling of having gone far away from home! Sometimes getting out of your house to go for a fun walk or do something that you don’t normally do is enough. Spending a night or two in a hotel to enjoy your own city and discover it from a tourist’s perspective is part of it.

These small touches make all the difference.

‘Local crafts, ‘local commerce’ or even ‘local partner’ have also become the watchwords in this pandemic, and it is important for us to honor these actors who make Montreal, our city, so alive and attractive.

At the hotel, we have always worked with local merchants. That’s why today, I’ve decided to talk to you about some of our local partners in Old Montreal who contribute to the everyday SoSulpice! experiences we offer at the hotel. So, I invite you to discover what you might come upon on your next ‘local trip’ in Old Montreal! Enjoy your visit!

Le Scandinave Spa du Vieux Montréal, 71 Rue de la Commune O, Montréal

The current situation and the season are finally inviting us to take care of ourselves and our loved ones! Our routine is upset by the changes that we’ve been experiencing for the last 6 months. We aspire to take care of ourselves, and above all, to take the time to do so. So, why not put a wellness break in your calendar? You deserve it!

I suggest a local trip to the country of wellness just a stone throw’s away from the hotel: Scandinave Spa . Currently, we do not have access to the baths (as per gouvernement guidelines), but you do have access to a massage. In a subdued and relaxing atmosphere, the massage therapists offer you a whole menu of massages: from 60 to 120 minutes, Swedish, Therapeutic, Deep Tissue, even Lomi Atsu massage… choose your formula and let yourself be immersed with the delicate scent of eucalyptus. Now is the time to relax your muscles, your back, release the pressure, and just not think about anything.Add a massage to your local trip at le saint-sulpice hotel Montreal. SoSulpice experience!

And for all Le Saint-Sulpice Hotel guests, benefit from a SoSulpice! Reduction. Contact our Concierge Team to find out more.

Our suggestions to discover Montreal safely this fall

Discover Montreal differently

The Covid-19 pandemic brought a lot of changes  in our way of traveling. Maybe you are in the situation to ask yourself: is it a good idea to visit and discover Montreal? We can assure that Montreal is still creative and deserves her reputation of being a giant playground full of activities!

This summer, international travelers obviously didn’t have the opportunity to visit Montreal. Therefore, Quebecers and travelers from Canadian provinces had the chance to freely walk along the historic cobblestone streets of Old Montreal. They experienced and discovered Montreal as never before, without crowded streets, just as if Montreal was theirs!

So you too, if you like walking uncrowded streets, and if you would like to discover Montreal on your own, it’s the right time to come to Montreal.

Children are back to school, and you are dreaming of a nice break (which you fully deserve!) ? You would like to relax with your loved one or your family, or just change your mind?

Here some suggestions of original and safe activities that should appeal to all ages.

Great local food gift ideas from Montreal

What makes a great food gift?

First, you need fresh products that grow exceptionally well in your area. Second, local expertise or savoir-faire and tradition. Third, a little twist that makes the end-product different from what’s done anywhere else. And finally, it has to be easy to pack in your luggage and be able to travel well. Following this concept, here are my choices for best food gifts from Montreal.

The best ideas of local food gifts

Ice Cider

My favorite suggestion for a local food gift is Ice Cider! Following the example of Niagara’s Icewine, Quebec growers have now mastered the art of picking apples as late as January, when they are frozen and covered with snow, and make this very fine product called ice cider. Great as an aperitif or to replace a dessert wine, ice cider accompanies with panache and enhances the flavors of cheeses, chocolates, foie gras and desserts. Among the best, we really like Neige Première and Pinnacle Signature. It’s the perfect food gift to carry in your luggage and it makes a great gift or souvenir!

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is our greatest pride, as far as agricultural products are concerned. This sweet syrup is unsurpassed for taste and refinement at the breakfast table! You can purchase nice gift bottles of maple syrup at Délices Érable & Cie. Stores, located in Old-Montreal and at Trudeau Airport, also at Jean-Talon or Atwater Farmer’s Markets and in most gift shops worthy of this name. Délices Érable & Cie. also makes maple leaf shaped chocolates, filled with maple syrup or maple sugar; the dark chocolate ones are my favorite! Another favorite is the Maple covered popcorn.

Macarons are delightful French pastries, fresh, fluffy and delicious. They make a great gift for any occasion and they are appetizing to the eyes with their multiple colors. Widely available in Montreal thanks to our French roots and large French community, we are lucky to have one of the best French pastry chefs, just two minutes walk from the hotel, at Maison Christian Faure. They can assemble and wrap a box of 6 or 12 macarons that you choose from a selection of more than 12 flavors in just a few seconds.

Smoked Meat

Smoked Meat, although best eaten freshly smoked on the premises, moist and hot, can also make a great food gift to bring back home. Chances are that one of your friends who has been to Montreal before, may have begged you to bring him back a brisket of Montreal style smoked meat; it’s that good! You can buy vacuum-sealed, ready-to-travel-across-the-border, briskets of smoked meat at Schwartz or at Lesters.

Bagels. Because we seriously think that Montreal bagels are better than New York’s! While the discussion on that subject has been going on for ages, you should definitely try them and bring some back for next Sunday’s brunch at your house! Two major bakers fight for the title of best in the city: Fairmount Bagels and St-Viateur Bagels. My heart goes to Fairmount, but really, they are both amazing!

The Province of Quebec has been producing great cheeses, some of them rivaling with the best French cheeses for the refinement of their taste and their quality. Oka, Pied de Vent and Migneron are at the top of my list of local cheeses but you have more than 300 different Quebec cheeses to choose from!

Enjoy your shopping and try to resist eating or drinking them yourselves before you actually do offer them as gifts!
